Clonie Gowen Wins World Poker Open

Clonie Gowen Wins World Poker Open
Thursday, 30 October 2008

It's been a while, but Clonie Gowen is once again making poker headlines having won the World Poker Open Main Event.

Gowen had a solid WSOP this year, cashing four times during the series, as well as a winning the Bellagio Cup back in July. Clonie came into the second day at the WPO well chipped-up, but struggled in the early going. A huge hand with 12 left saw Gowen flop two pair to take down a monster pot, big enough to see her to the final table with a comfortable chip lead.

The final table itself wasn't simple for Gowen though, and she eventually found herself in midtable, fifth in chips with eight remaining. Once again though, she hit a key hand when her pocket queens held up against the AT of Brandon Jarrett. Brandon would later lose another big pot to Gowen when his flush draw couldn't chase down the flopped top pair of Gowen, eliminating Jarrett in third.

The heads-up battle between Gowen and BJ McBrayer was one way traffic, with her experience allowing her to play a more aggressive game. She eventually wrapped up the title to add another title to what is proving to be a very fruitful year for the pro.
