Scott Clements overcame a final table which had a mix of old guard, amateur talent and some of the up and coming young talents in the game. Two of the final table were 19 year-old Internet pros, Jeff “ActionJeff” Garza and Kofi Fakye, and there were also two former WPT winners – Barry Greenstein and Jonathon Little.
It wasn’t a good day for the two Internet professionals, going out first and second, both felled by Clements. Next to go was Barry Greenstein, who took a bad beat when moving all in and getting a call from Canadian amateur Cloutier’s K9. Greenstein tabled the dominating A9, but the King fell on the turn, and there was no ace on the river for the most famous player at the table.
Once Greenstein had gone, play slowed down with three handed play being a real war of attrition. Cloutier stepped up his game and grabbed the chip lead. The two more experienced players waited for the rookie to make a mistake, which he did eventually after five hours and 137 of three handed play.
Heads up lasted a relatively painless 14 hands, and Clements’ win put him 2nd in the Card Player ‘Player of the Year’ competition, as well as winning him CAD$1.38m and a seat at the $25,000 WPT Championship.
