Christophe Savary wins WPT Marrakech Main Event

Christophe Savary wins WPT Marrakech Main Event

Monday, 19 October 2009

Christophe Savary has become the first man to win a major poker title on African soil after winning the WPT event in Marrakech, Morocco. The Frenchman outlasted a field of 416 runners to claim the first prize of €377,262.

Savary started the final table second in chips and largely bided his time early on as the small stacks banged heads. He seized his chance when it came though, flopping a set and rivering a full house to beat Ludovic Lacay’s backdoor flush. This huge pot gave Savary the chip lead, a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish.

The Frenchman sealed the win by beating Eoghan O’Dea heads up. The chips went in with O’Dea holding top pair to Savary’s straight. There were to be no miracles for the young Irishman who was forced to settle for €262,446 for his runner up finish.

Savary becomes the fourth Frenchman to win a WPT bracelet, joining A listers Elky, David Benyamine and Thomas Bichon.

The WPT now heads to the Bellagio in Las Vegas for the Festa al Lago Classic, which starts on 21 October.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Christophe Savary €377,262
2. Eoghan O’Dea €262,446
3. Ludovic Lacay €164,182
4. Julien Arneodo €105,077
5. Adrian Marin €72,240
6. Benjamin Spindler €55,828
