Tuesday, 14 April 2009

39-year-old Swedish professional Christer Johansson outlasted a field of 700 runners to claim the 2009 Irish Poker Open Main Event. Johansson, whose previous biggest win was the €500,000 WPT Paris event in 2003 took home a first prize of €600,000.

Aside from Johansson, the big story in Dublin was the performance of Kara Scott. Better known for her commentary and presenting abilities she put in a storming performance eventually finishing second for a €312,600 payout.
Andrew Pantling who started the final table with more than double the chips of his nearest rival busted out in 3rd place leaving Johansson and Scott to battle it out for the title.

All the chips went in the middle after 70 minutes of heads up play. Scott raised on the button and Johansson called. The flop came J-K-7. The Swede checked, Scott raised, Johansson re-raised and Scott pushed. After much deliberation Johansson called showing K-3 to Scott’s J-9. The turn and river improved neither hand and Johansson took the crown.
"I'm very happy to win this tournament," Johansson said. "Not just for the prize money, but this tournament has a very long history in Europe and a great atmosphere, so it is great to win."

Marcel Koch won the Paddy Power Poker Sole Survivor prize after finishing in 16th place. As the best placed Paddy Power Poker qualifier he claimed a cash and sponsorship package worth €100,000 in addition to his €17,900 prize money.
