It’s great to be the champ. Being confident in your own play is one thing, but sticking £500 of your own money on the line is another. That’s precisely what the new PaddyPower.com Irish Open champion Neil Channing did though, landing himself an additional £50,000 on top of his €800,000 first place prize money.
Channing, a regular writer for Bluff Europe magazine, placed the bet at the start of Day 2,making it the second time bookies have been caught out by a winning punt on the Irish Open. In 2006, Vincent Melinn backed himself to win the title, collecting €47,000 on top of the €350,000 first prize.
“I think it is great what Paddy Power have done for the Irish Open,” said Channing, a former bookmaker himself. “They ran a great event, added €200,000 to the prizepool and offered a really good book on the tournament. They went a lot further than many other bookmakers would go.”
As well as already offering markets on next Easter’s Irish Open, the firm are offering markets for the European Poker Tour grand final in Monte Carlo, the World Series of Poker and the PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Winter Festival. The way he’s playing right now, we're going to have a few quid on Neil!
