Hip-hop superstar Jay-Z and Yankees player Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez transformed a New York nightclub into a poker club on November 15.
The duo hosted a celebrity poker tournament featuring a number of high-profile sports stars –Dan Marino, Cal Ripken Jr. and Julius Erving – as well as entertainment personalities such as Nelly, Cedric the Entertainer and Steve Harvey.
Proceeds from the evening benefited Rodriguez's A-Rod Family Foundation and Jay-Z's S. Carter Scholarship Foundation.
'The response has been incredible, and the celebrity turnout has been great,' Rodriguez said. 'For Jay-Z to team up with us, it's a dream team to raise money for a great cause.'
The decision to host a poker tournament seemed something of an odd choice for Rodriguez, after the star sparked controversy last year when it was revealed that he had played at an underground poker club in New York.
'I got in some trouble for poker last year, so why not turn it around and raise some money for the children?' Rodriguez said. 'Poker is hot. People are excited, and it's a great way to raise a lot of money.”
