47 runners assembled at the Rendezvous Casino in Southend. Celebrity poker players mingled with professional poker players and the poker-loving public to see who would win the inaugural CelebPoker Classic.
There was a strong footballing contingent with Teddy Sheringham and Matthew Etherington of West Ham and Simon Davies of Spurs all putting up their £1000 buy-in to pit their skill and luck against the likes of Channel 4 and At The Races pundit John McCririck, Rogue-Trader Nick Leeson and former Eastender Michael Grecco.
One of the first to luck-out was Ron Ainsworth. Ron had previously come an excellent second in the CelebPoker UK Challenge which was held over the August bank holiday in Brighton.
After 4 hours of play, the numbers had been reduced to just 10 players. Out of all the celebrity players only one was left – Matthew Etherington, who had played a very tight game?
Whilst the final 10 battled it out to the finish, a free-roll was being conducted. 12 players had the opportunity to share in the CelebPoker £1000 Texas Hold ‘Em Free Roll.
Competition was stiff, fierce and full of rivalry! Teddy Sheringham didn’t want to lose to Simon Davies who in turn didn’t want to lose to Nick Leeson who didn’t want to succumb to Chris Brooks, who wanted to beat his best friend Scott Robinson formerly of 5ive! As it turned out, Teddy won a very hard fought competition and won first prize of £600. Chris Brooks of Capital Radio came second winning £300 and Elkan Allan £100 in 3rd spot.
