Cathal Shines to Win European Deepstack Championship

Wednesday, 26 February 2014

There was a home win in Dublin over the weekend after Cathal Shine took the honours in the European Deepstack Championship.

The Irishman worked his way through a field of 450 runners in the €550 buy-in event and pocketed €38,375 for his efforts.

For much of the final day it looked as if Joost Schippers would be taking the title to the Netherlands. The Dutchman dominated much of the final table action and appeared the most likely winner when play went three handed with Shine and Belgium's Jonas Van Bogaert.

Schippers doubled up both his opponents though which put a big dent in his stack. The trio then agreed an ICM based chop with €4,800, the title and the trophy still to play for.

Irishman Shine continued (excuse the pun) chipping away and took control of the tournament by winning a succession of small but significant pots.

Schippers eliminated his Belgian rival in third but couldn't deny a home win with Shine claiming victory when his pocket Jacks held against the Dutchman's pocket nines.
