The first $10,000 buy-in event in Las Vegas since the World Series Main Event in July started at Caesars Palace, with 287 players taking part.
The field contained some top names, including the likes of Mike Matusow, David Benyamine, David Williams, David Pham, Tuan Le, Phil Laak and J.C Tran. Also in the line up was internet phenom Sorel Mizzi, who had something of an interesting Day One.
Mizzi was down to a single $25 chip and a chair, which soon turned into $1,675. Those chips found their way into the centre after he picked up Ad Jd and was called by Tony Cousineau tabled Kd Td. The board ended up with Mizzi pairing his Jack, and Cousineau both of his hole cards – only problem being that the board was all spades, and a chopped pot for both. After that, Seat 2 came up with a nugget, claiming Mizzi was “like the guy in the horror movie that you shoot three times in the head and then he comes back to life with an axe to kill you.”
Antonio Esfandiari was the next to feel that way after his Pocket Queens on the big blind failed to hold up to Mizzi’s all in push with T7, after Mizzi hit runner-runner trip sevens. Someone did manage to finally nail Mizzi though, and players are (at the time of writing) down to the final thirteen. Chip leader is another internet legend in Justin Bonomo, who still has the likes of Kido Pham, David Singer and Scott Fischmann to contend with.
