The money earnings lists for tournaments has been published, and while Annette Obrestad might have won the most prestigious tournament in Europe this year, she’s not at the top of the list. In fact, the top is populated with Brits, with three Englishmen following an Irishman.
John Kalmar, Joe Beevers and Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott are the three men who are neck and neck at the top of the list, with Kalmar’s earnings coming from his 5th place finish in the WSOP Main Event. Joe Beevers managed to win the Poker Million and GBPT Grand Final in what proved to be a very profitable close to 2007, while Devilfish had a strong year, with a WPT and WSOP final table, as well as a WPT side event win.
The biggest story to break from the British game was the rise and rise of Julian Thew, who won both a GUKPT and EPT title for a total of $1.18 million. Mark Teltscher was just below that on $1.16m after he came second in the EPT Barcelona, coupled with a number of equally impressive cashes throughout the rest of the year.
Two other players who feature highly on the ‘Brits Taking the Money’ rankings are John Tabatabai ($1.16m for second at the WSOPE), and Marty Smyth of Northern Ireland, who tops the lot with $1.37m for his runners up spot at the Poker Million and his success at the Irish Open.
As for the Scandinavians, they had six players who netted more than a million in tournament winnings – Obrestad, Andreas Hoivold and Trond Eidsvig from Norway, along with Gus Hansen, Soren Kongsgaard and Sander Lyloff from Denmark. We won’t mention the fact that 34 Americans won a million or more, but then they do get the pick of the big tournaments, anyway.
