Whilst it was a great weekend for the average sports fan, with Six Nations rugby and the Superbowl final, it was something of a nightmare for Betfair. When their online poker software was hit with a glitch, a number of players decided it was time to jump on and exploit the technical mishap. Now Betfair are looking to contact those players in a bid to recoup the money.
According to a report in The Telegraph, around twenty players have been contacted by Betfair in an attempt to recover money that was quickly withdrawn from Betfair accounts after the games.
The problem itself was realised when, if all players in the ‘Six-Pack’ short-handed sit-‘n’-gos went all in on the first hand, the winner would be paid first, and all other players would be paid the full amount supposed to be paid to the second-place finisher. Basically, everyone made a profit. When the players recognised what was going on, it’s alleged they communicated via online chat programs and played hundreds of games over night at higher stakes.
After Betfair had recognised there was a flaw in their in-house software platform, they rectified the glitch within hours. The figure Betfair is seeking to recoup is being touted at £100,000, although the actual monetary damage is thought to be much higher.
In the email sent to the players in the raid, Betfair wrote:
'You recently received payments from playing Sit & Go STTs [single table tournaments] on Betfair Poker in circumstances that resulted in greater payouts than intended.' They continued to say the games 'were incorrectly set up to pay everyone involved in certain all-in situations and this was exploited by you and others to generate substantial returns in a short space of time. As I'm sure you can understand, the winnings received as a result of this exploitation must be returned.'
