Ben Hamnett wins WPT Borgata Open

Saturday, 22 September 2012

Ben Hamnett is over $818k to the good after taking down the $3,500 WPT Borgata Open. The American outlasted a large 1,181 runner field to walk away his biggest tournament score to date.

Hamnett went into the six-handed final table fifth in the chip counts but really gained momentum after eliminating Steve Brecher in fifth. Like any tournament victor the champ need a bit of luck along the way and he got a huge slice of it while knocking out Tyler Patterson. It looked like a split pot was the best Hamnett could hope for when he got it in with A4 against Patterson's A6 but a four on the turn put him in a dominant position.

Hamnett had a two to one chip lead at the start of heads up play against long time chip leader Matthew Burnitz and won all the major pots that mattered, sealing victory when his KQ held against Burnitz's 10-J.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Ben Hamnett – $818,847
2. Matthew Burnitz – $488,850
3. Tyler Patterson – $298,950
4. Ofir Mor – $250,065
5. Steve Brecher – $206,821
6. David Diaz – $167,337
