Actor Ben Affleck showed he’s luckier at cards than he is in love, by outlasting ninety players to become crowned California State Poker Champ on at the Commerce Casino Sunday, pocketing $356,400 along the way. The Oscar winner proved that celebrities aren’t just there to make up the numbers at poker tournaments, by outwitting poker pro, Stan Goldstein, and Castle Rock Entertainment honcho, Chuck Pacheco, at the final table.
In a brief victory speech at the Commerce, Affleck explained modestly that he ‘got lucky’, adding that he was pleased to be able to prove that he wasn’t a ‘complete donkey’ when it came to poker, perhaps referring to his defeat at the hands of Sex and the City's Willie Garson on the first episode of Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown.
Officials at the casino just outside L.A, however, gave the star more credit for his performance: 'This is not likely the last time you'll see Ben Affleck at one of our final tables,' said spokeswoman Nancy Friedman. 'He has become a respected member of the poker elite and continues to work to improve his game.'
