The Poker Players’ Alliance, a non-profit organisation collectively aimed at fighting the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA), now exceeds over one million members and has backed the presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who is incidentally a skilled Texas Hold‘em and Seven-Card Stud player.
Doyle ‘Texas Dolly’ Brunson, ten-time World Series of Poker bracelet-winner and regarded as one of the best poker players in the world, was a Republican for almost all of his 74 years before switching his political allegiance to support Obama and the Democrats.
World-renowned player Andy Bloch, part of the infamous MIT blackjack team and runner-up in the inaugural $50,000 Championship H.O.R.S.E. event, revealed that most poker players are showing similar support.
The UIGEA was brought into effect by the Republican administration of George W. Bush and prevented American players gambling at several major sites. The Republican candidate is war veteran John McCain. It is unknown how he will treat Internet gambling should he come into power.
