It’s been about three months now since my 21st birthday. In two months’ time I imagine I’ll be sailing along in this same boat; writing poker satire and news for Europe’s most proud and noble gambling publication while playing some micro-to-small-stakes on the side. Five months after my 21st birthday that is how I feel life will be.

Five months after Jason Mercier’s 21st birthday he won €869,000 at the EPT San Remo tournament in April 2008. It was the start of a trailblazing tear through the live tournament world as just five months later after a series of cashes at the WSOP he final tabled the EPT Barcelona for €227,800. That same month he final tabled the £5,000 PLO WSOPE tournament and followed it up with a win at the £20,000 European Poker Championships for over half a million quid.


Then he decided that wasn’t enough tournament success and decided to make 2009 that bit better. He opened proceedings with a win at the LA Poker Classic in a $1,500 PLO event and then made another final table in a $5,000 event before heading back to Vegas and taking down The Wynn Classic PLO event for $80,000. That’s when he realised he needed a WSOP bracelet and took down the $1,500 PLO event in 2009 for $240,000.


Three months later he returned to Barcelona for the EPT and came second in a €1,000 preliminary event before heading to London where he had a great month – he came fourth in the WSOPE Main Event for £270,000 and then took down a £2,500 side event for £115,000.


This year he’s won the Southern Poker Championship $1,000 event; the $5,000 H.O.R.S.E. at the Doyle Brunson Classic; the NAPT Mohegan Sun $25,000 Bounty Shootout and made four other major final tables.
He turned 24 less than a week ago. The jammy git. If I have three EPT final tables, two titles and a WSOP bracelet in three years then I will eat all kinds of hats.
