BLOG – Where the hell did Frank Kassela come from?

Friday, 2 July 2010

Frank Kassela is an American poker pro. He has made a little over a million dollars in live tournaments since the 2003 poker boom – he’s a good player who grinded out a living in live Stud cash games before the Hold ‘em boom hit and he profited. In the past six or seven years he has made a few cashes here and there, a couple of runner-up spots.

Now in his fifties he has suddenly decided he’s a bit good. At the 41st World Series of Poker (that’s this one, for the numerically challenged out there) Kassela has made $677,934 including two deep runs in the $2,500 Mixed Event and the $1,500 Limit Hold ‘em as well as winning both the $10,000 Stud Hi/Lo Championship and the $2,500 7-Card Razz bracelet. Oh, and he’s currently in fifth place of 18 remaining in the $25,000 6-max event, guaranteed at least $60,000 but maybe up to $1.3m.

What the hell, Frank? Why haven’t you been doing this for years? Did you only just remember how to play? Of course, there is still time for the Player of the Year award to go the way of John Juanda, who is probably more impressive this year as he is challenging for it without winning a bracelet.

Yup, Full Tilt Poker pro Juanda hasn’t won a tournament but he’s making final tables left right and centre: fourth in the $50,000 Players’ Championship; fifth in the $10,000 Stud Hi/Lo; fourth in the $10,000 2-7 Lowball; third in the $3,000 HORSE; 297th in the $1,500 NL... oh, scratch that last one.

Of course, we all knew Juanda was a bit good anyway but still – nicely done to both gents topping the POTY rankings. I, and thus you, shall be following with a keen interest as the WSOP progresses. It’s almost over, folks!
