BLOG – WSOP Main Event Day 4

Wednesday, 14 July 2010

Well, it’s happened. Fifty-six preliminary events, a full week of solid grinding poker and now we are in the money of the 41st annual World Series of Poker $10,000 NL Main Event with 574 players making the money AND surviving to Day 5.

It is interesting to note that 748th place finisher and so-called Bubble Boy Tim McDonald is not the bubble boy; he’s broken even with his free 2011 Main Event spot and if anything it’s the poor sap who finishes 749th and got bugger-all who is the bubble boy.

Anyway, now that we’re proceeding into Day 5 we can start looking at the field and making out likely final table contenders – Tony Dunst, online pro known as Bond18 is leading the field with over 1.5m in chips midway through the 3k/6k blind levels. Look a few spots down the chip ladder and you find my personal favourite to win, Phil Galfond in fifth place with almost 1.4m.

Galfond is one of the world’s most underrated Hold ‘em players; his specialty is PLO but people often forget he’s also one of the world’s best NL players. Put him in this event, full of fish with deep stacks and lots of post-flop play and there’s no reason he can’t do an Ivey. Or better.
Johnny Chan slipped out of the top 10 but is still alive and with 1,159,000 won’t have to worry about his stack for a while. To be honest, while he is capable of a very deep run I can’t see him competing against the likes of Galfond. Chan is still a great player but I don’t think he has it in him any more. Then again he is through to Day 5 with over a million in chips so what do I know? The Oriental Express rolls on...

Who else is still alive? Theo Jorgensen, with over 1.34m; two-time bracelet-winner and UK favourite JP Kelly; Praz Bansi provides more UK hopes as both have over 650,000. The only other Main Event champion alive in the field is Scotty Nguyen on 630,000.

He’ll probably get drunk and provide a very entertaining ESPN broadcast if he goes deep again.
