BLOG – The Year of the Brit; just not in football

Monday, 28 June 2010

So, it’s all over for another four years; at which point millions of men and women will once again become convinced that England are actually better than average at football and will cheer them on into the Round of 16 or maybe even if we’re very lucky, the quarter finals.

Surprise and disappointment were the main emotions I witnessed after Germany sodomised our national team 4-1 – that and anger at the ref and officials for one of the most ridiculous disallowed goals ever. Why do you have that camera in the goal if you don’t use it to check shots like that? Ridiculous.

Anyway, let me be the one to tell you that England had absolutely zero chance of winning this World Cup even if that goal had been allowed; even if we’d got another to make it 2-3 and beaten Argentina in the quarter-finals; then Spain; then Brazil? Does anyone honestly think our mediocre squad had a chance?

They probably did – it’s the same reason people enter poker tournaments, or buy lottery tickets. Because probably not, but maybe – as an aside, I found it hilarious that the official England slogan for 2010 was “Maybe, just maybe.” In Euro 2012 it’ll be “Doubtful but why not?” and in 2014 just simply “Stuff it, let’s watch Wimbledon instead.”

Speaking of poker tournaments and poor performances by UK players... actually I have no way to make that sentence end because the Brits have been doing damn well at this year’s WSOP. James “Flushy” Dempsey netted a bracelet and a runner-up spot (the latter in a $10,000 event, no less) while just this morning Dave “Devilfish” Ulliot came third in the $5,000 Omaha 8 event. Stuart Rutter and Neil Channing both final tabled the $5,000 NL Shootout while Richard Ashby took down the $1,500 Stud event as well as coming runner-up in the $10,000 HORSE. Oh, and Steve Jelinek got himself an Omaha 8 win.

Oh, and I do apologise for my absence yesterday but I had heatstroke. I know it’s such a British and pathetic thing to get heatstroke in 24-degree sun but in my defence I was on a very hot (overheating, in fact – bastard needs a new radiator soon) motorcycle in full leathers for a couple of hours.

Note to self: drink more water.
