BLOG – The Main Event

Monday, 5 July 2010

It’s happening. Tonight (UK time at least) Event #57 of the 2010 World Series of Poker will begin; the $10,000 Main Event that last year saw Joe Cada take over $8m from a total prize pool of over $64,000,000 to become the youngest Main Event champion in history.

Last year the numbers were slightly down on the 6,844 players that Peter Eastgate beat to become... well, the youngest Main Event champion in history until Joe Cada took the title. I can only imagine someone whose 21st birthday is today will win it. Actually it’s one of my friend’s birthdays today so she had best get her fine ass to Vegas pronto.

So, what do we expect from the Main Event this year? Despite the UIGEA and all that scaremongering in the US the fields this year haven’t been disappointing, at least when it comes to the Hold ‘em events. The $1,500 events have been seeing regular fields that top 2,500 and the $1,000 events are easily making 4,000 entrants. It’s down on 2008/9 but not by significant amounts.

My prediction for this year’s Main Event is something like 6,100 entrants. I don’t think we’ll sink below the six-kay milestone but I doubt it will be smashed and it will almost certainly be down on Joe Cada’s tournament.
One significant change they’ve made is that there will only be four levels of play each day – each level will last two hours which is great for the players but it makes me wonder whether they plan to hit the money before Day 6?

Anyway, screw it – it’s time for the poker world at large to put up $10,000 for their annual lottery ticket to poker immortality. I’m not betting against Phil Ivey...
