BLOG – The Durrrr Challenge... or lack thereof
Wednesday, 28 July 2010

Tom “durrrr” Dwan – the undisputed King of Online Poker, with multi-millionaire status, a stake in Full Tilt Poker and accustomed to swings of cash figures that most people will never dream of seeing in a lifetime. When he created the “Durrrr Challenge” last year the poker world watched with baited breath.

Four tables of Pot-Limit Omaha or No-Limit Hold ‘em heads up, for 50,000 hands at minimum blinds of $200/$400 – Dwan was so confident of his edge online when multi-tabling that he offered 3-1 odds that he would win at a bet of $500,000. Well, it’s been over a bloody year and Patrik Antonius still hasn’t gotten off his sculpted Finnish butt to (excuse imminent homophone pun) finish the challenge.

With fewer than 80 per cent of the total hands played after more than a year – and the last session was April 30, by the way – Antonius is down $1.8m. Were I him, I’d cut my losses, pay out the $500,000 and accept a $2.3m defeat. He’s never going to get it back in 11,026 hands left to play.

That’s not the point, anyway – Dwan defeating Antonius isn’t a huge surprise, though the margin of defeat is. The point is that this has been going on for OVER A YEAR. A bit of maths, if you’ll bear with me – at a heads-up PLO table you’re looking at 150 hands per hour, minimum. Across four challenge tables that’s 600 hands per hour, meaning that to play 50,000 hands it should only take 83 hours. Really, Dwan and Patrik? You’ve only had 70 odd hours free in the last year and a bit?

This is why I was super duper happy to learn that jungleman12 is going to take the durrrr challenge. They’re both online players and they can both play in their regular games as well as take on each other at heads-up NL on four tables. We should see the next challenge knocked out in less than a fortnight.

Oh, and Brian Townsend is meant to be the next taker. And durrrr said he can do two at once. This is gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
