BLOG – It is time. WSOPE Main Event begins Thursday

Tuesday, 21 September 2010

Of course we’re excited by the £10,300 High Roller heads-up event that begins at The Empire Casino for Event 4 of the 2010 World Series of Poker Europe today but come on – the Main Event kicks off on Thursday and that’s really the one that everyone is waiting for.

A £10,300 ($15,800) buy-in deepstack event with hundreds of poker’s biggest names? Undoubtedly the toughest regular tournament field in the poker world with the likes of Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Daniel Negreanu and many more besides in the house for the six-day event that culminates next Tuesday.

Fortunately for those of you that can’t make it down to Leicester Square to watch the action live, Bluff Europe has got its best man on the job to bring you live reporting. Wait, what? Our best man is unavailable? Well, I guess I’ll have to do then. Yup, from Thursday until Tuesday I’ll be bringing you all the action here at BluffEurope.com. Super.

Because I like making predictions and I need to fill my word count let’s take a gander at some numbers from Annette Obrestad’s 2007 victory to last year’s Shulman affair. In 2007 when then-18-year-old Annette Obrestad won £1,000,000, she beat a field of 362 players to earn 27% of the £3,676,990 prize pool.

The next year, John Juanda earned a bracelet and a £868,800 payday for besting the same size field – 362 players – and taking home 24% of the £3,620,000 prize pool. Last year it was Barry Shulman who beat Daniel Negreanu heads-up for the bracelet after surviving 334 players. He won £801,603; 24% of a £3,340 pool.

So what of this year? Personally I am predicting the biggest field yet – just look at how much poker has been advertised in the UK in 2010. Add to this the fact that UK pros have brought home five WSOP bracelets and three EPT titles as well as keeping the inaugural WPT London prize on home soil and we’re looking at a Brit-filled strong field. I’m going to say that this year we have 388 players and that first prize will be £892,442. Anyone want the over?
