It’s hard to imagine what winning $10 million feels like. It’s also pretty difficult to believe that winning that amount of money wouldn’t change your life. But according to Joe Hachem, who won that amount at last year’s WSOP, his life hasn’t changed one bit.
Apart from having a massive bank balance and being known throughout the poker world as one of its best players, Hachem says that after winning last year, his focus has been on his family rather than the cards. He decided after much deliberation not to uproot and move to the United States, preferring to stay at home in Melbourne. He also says that his home life is no different than before, with the same house and set up that he had before he took Vegas by storm last summer.
Although he claims to still be the same, his influence on poker in Australia cannot be denied. Since his win there has been a trebling in poker participation in casinos and an explosion in online play. And you can bet that of any of those newcomers’ lives would be changed with a win like his.
