Given that the WSOP starts on Tuesday and there was another untimely billowing of Icelandic volcano ash it was perhaps understandable that numbers for the opening flight of the WPT Spanish Championship weren't huge.

In all 94 players ponied up the €3,200+€300 for Day 1A at Barcelona's Gran Casino and by the close just 54 were left standing. Leading the way was Artur Koren who was in pole position for the duration, bagging up 122,800 chips, more than double the average stack. Joining Koren in the six-figure stack club were Justin Tazelaar, Julien Mariani and Michele Danielo.

A smatterin of big names pros were in attendance for the opening flight with Leo Margets, new RAY Poker pro Juha Helppi and recent EPT Snowfest runner up Kevin Vandermissen all making it through to Day 2.

A bigger field is expected for the second opening flight which begins later this afternoon.
