The World Poker Tour’s most active and fan orientated tournament kicked off yesterday as 270 players lined up for the $7,500 Bay 101 Shooting Star event.

The annual tournament places a $2,500 bounties on a selection of pros and this year the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Jonathan Duhamel and Vanessa Selbst all had targets on their backs.

On top of the bounty bonuses, any player who finishes at the top of the chip counts at the close of each day wins $10,000.

Scooping yesterday’s jackpot after a storming last level was Andrew Lichtenberger. The American pro managed to claim Antonio Esfandiari’s bounty, before eliminating Jerry Yang and Matt O’Donnell in a double coup.

Those pots helped push his stack to 341,000 and leave him comfortably ahead of Stephen Bokor (274,200), Andy Hwang (242,000) and Phaly Nou (232,800).

Of the Shooting Stars on display yesterday, Negreanu, Hellmuth, Selbst, Duhamel, Esfandiari, JC Tran and Shannon Shorr all hit the rail.

Today’s second starting session will welcome a new batch of hopefuls all looking to bag some fresh bounties on their way to winning the title.
