We all need an underdog to cheer, and new players keep the game fresh. Two kinds of poker tournament are best at bringing us new heros; celebrity vs. pro, and online poker freerolls.
Winner of the 5th World Poker Tour Invitational Pros. V. Celebs tournament Adam Weinraub may have had some help from the NBC heads-up championship: the two were double booked and many pros preferred the heads-up event.
Most celebrities were knocked out on day one, including Paris Hilton (shrug) and Don Cheadle (gasp!). An aggressive blind structure cut the field to 70 on day two, but modest, film director Weinraub was chip leader. When asked about playing with poker pros and A-listers he said, “I’m just a peon!” The peon took the prize from “Miami” John Cernuto.
Unknown Mark Carroll, winner of the Absolute Dream Package has just been guaranteed entry to 10 of the biggest poker tournaments in the world, including the WSOP and WPT events and one-to-one training from Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi.
'Being a professional poker player has always been my dream. For practically no money at all, someone will get to experience touring the poker circuit.” Said Carroll, who called it “Hitting the poker lottery”.
Let’s hope we see more of both of them.
