Tony Veckey wins WSOP Event #54 $1,500 No Limit Hold’em
Thursday, 2 July 2009

28 players returned for the final day of the final $1,500 No Limit Hold’em event but in the end it was Chicago rookie Tony Veckey who walked away with the title.

The list of great players who’ve never won a bracelet is a long one. Think of Bloch, Hansen, Antonius, Durrrr, ElkY. There’ll be no millstone hanging round novice Tony Veckey’s neck though as he marked his WSOP debut by winning the bracelet.

Veckey, playing in his first ever World Series tournament outlasted a bumper field of 2,818 runners to claim the $673,276 first prize. The software engineer had limited expectations heading into the event, just hoping to make the money. Commenting on why he wanted to play the WSOP he said “I came out this year because I liked the photos of all the money you see on TV”. He’s now got plenty to look at.

After 11 hours of play Veckey beat Jason Wheeler heads up, holding a flopped straight to Wheeler’s top pair top kicker. The turn and river didn’t change the outcome and Veckey was crowned champion.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1 Tony Veckey $673,276
2 Jason Wheeler $418,122
3 Joseph Chaplin $276,029
4 Sergey Konkin $195,213
5 Andrew Malott $147,131
6 Christopher Bonita $117,358
7 Christopher DeMaci $98,933
8 David Jaoui $87,855
9 Miha Remic $81,970
