Phil Ivey shuns the limelight

Phil Ivey shuns the limelight

Wednesday, 8 July 2009

Players allocated a seat at table 90 on Day 1D could have been forgiven for having mixed feelings when Phil Ivey rocked up to join them...

On the one hand there was the daunting prospect of facing arguably the greatest player in the world and someone who had already won two bracelets at this year’s WSOP. On the other there was the prospect of an unexpected payday from broadcasters ESPN who wanted them to move to the televised feature table.

Ivey was feeling somewhat camera shy though and refused to move. ESPN reluctantly agreed to Ivey’s wishes leaving the rest of the table disappointed at their missing payday. The seven-time bracelet winner is rumoured to have offered all the other players at his table $5,000 in compensation with a promise to send them a further $50,000 should he go on to win the Main Event.
