November Nine Profile - Jeff Shulman

Monday, 3 August 2009

Editor of CardPlayer magazine, Shulman has over $1m in tournament winnings prior to the November Nine spot that guarantees him at least $1.2m. Our editors could have millions in tournament winnings if they wanted but they're too busy producing this high-quality magazine and website.

Shulman is now 34 and this is his second Main Event final table - in 2000, he won $145,000 for a seventh-place finish in the event that Chris "Jesus" Ferguson eventually won by besting TJ Cloutier heads-up.

Shulman's last final table appearance at a WSOP event prior to the 2009 Main Event came in 2005, when he finished seventh in a $5,000 buy-in Limit Hold'em tournament for $50,000. In addition he has $400,000 in earnings on the WPT circuit.

Shulman created controversy in the poker industry by claiming that he would "toss [my] bracelet in the trash" were he to win the Main Event. Speculation loomed that he was bitter of Harrahs' dealings with our sister magazine in the US, Bluff.

However, Shulman denied these claims, saying his remarks were due to his "lack of respect for the WSOP and the management and what they've done to all of the players. I don't like it."

He has since thought of alternatives to discarding the silverware, including auctioning it off for charity, holding a tournament for players shut out of the 2009 Main Event and awarding the bracelet to its winner, and giving the piece of hardware away on Spade Club, an online play money site.
