Hit Squad's James hits the jackpot

Hit Squad's James hits the jackpot

Thursday, 16 July 2009

They say that appearing on the front cover of American magazine Sports Illustrated is a curse. Perhaps the opposite can be said of Bluff Europe as this month’s cover star is none other than James Akenhead who’s excellent run of form has taken him all the way to the final table of the Main Event.

Akenhead, a former train driver, started playing poker in 2004 and has quickly established himself as one of the top young players in the games, even drawing comparisons to the great Stu Ungar. The Hit Squad member spent many an hour learning his trade at The Gutshot and has recently joined the pro ranks at Full Tilt.

Akenhead, who was rated one of the top 20 pool players in the country before taking up poker, certainly deserves a bit of luck at the World Series after being dealt a savage beat while heads up in a 2008 $1,500 No Limit Event. The Londoner, holding AK, managed to induce opponent Grant Hinkle to make an all in move holding 10-4 only to see a brutal flop of 10-4-10 crush his chances.

The 25-year-old now has the opportunity to vanquish those memories on the biggest stage of all and give a timely boost to British poker. Bluff Europe wishes him every success.
