Monday, 29 June 2009

Brandon ‘The Bounty Hunter’ Cantu outlasted a field of 762 runners to win the $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha Split 8 or Better. The 28-year-old, who was runner up in last week’s $1,500 buy-in No Limit Hold Em event, saw off a final table that included England’s Steve Jelinek and Tommy Vedes before beating 2006 WSOP PLO champion Lee Watkinson heads up.

A magnanimous Cantu said “I wasn’t the best player at the table. I wasn’t event close to the best player. I have played very limited amounts of Pot-Limit Omaha Eight-or-Better. It worked out, but I don’t think I was the best player at the table.”

In winning his second WSOP bracelet, Cantu collected $228,867 taking his career WSOP winnings past the $1.4m mark.

Phil Hellmuth also went deep, eventually busting out in 14th place. This was Hellmuth’s 73rd cash at the WSOP which puts him at the top of the all-time list.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. Brandon Cantu - $228,867
2. Lee Watkinson - $141,873
3. Mathieu Jacqmin - $92,946
4. Ted Weinstock - $74,727
5. Tommy Vedes - $47,617
6. Steve Jelinek - $36,893
7. Aaron Sias - $30,028
8. Ronnie Hofman - $25,618
