The day started with 337 and ended with 98, taking just seven levels of play to get down to under a hundred players. What was most shocking about the days play is the fact that strewn among the bodies sent to the rail are some of the big names: Ivey, Lederer, Juanda, Cunningham and Hachem all vanquished.
Phil Ivey in particular will be disappointed. Beginning the day on 165,000, Ivey had the platform to go deep into the event and perhaps match the performance of fellow Full Tilt pro Gus Hansen in last year's event. It wasn’t to be for Ivey though. Having lost a couple of pots early in the day, he then looked to maximise his earnings with pocket Aces, calling an all in bet on a flop showing Qh-8s-4d. He had been out-flopped by his opponent’s 8d-4h, and the board offered no help for the pro.
Joe Hachem will have to fetch his own sugar this year as well, having gone out early in the day despite a decent starting stack. Hachem however got his money in good, with trip threes against his opponents overpair. However, it all went sour from the man from Australia as his opponent caught runner-runner flush.
Howard Lederer also got outdrawn to send him on his way to the sidelines after his AK failed to hold against A9. He will still leave Melbourne with good memories though, having picked up $1.2 million in the $100,000 buy-in event earlier in the series.
One pro who does remain is Mike ‘The Mouth’ Matusow. He was the recipient of some good luck though, when he got all in with A-Q against A-K and another A-K. When the queen hit on the turn, and another on the river for slight overkill, Matusow managed to triple up, and is sure to turn up the volume in Day 3.
Other notable players still remaining are: Erik Seidel, Andy Black, Raymond Rahme, Peter Jepsen, Tom Dwan, Max Pescatori, Jeffrey Lisandro, Tiffany Williamson, Kenna James and Erick Lindgren.
