Elkan Allan may well have been remembered as one of the most innovative men in media and television production, but few knew that he was also a keen poker player. When he died in November 2006, he was in the middle of ‘The Poker Encyclopedia’, a book designed to be the ultimate reference guide for poker players. The book was completed after his death by the young poker writer Hannah Mackay, and has now been published through Portico Books.
The book will be a saviour for those of us who have poker questions or disputes which need answering. Entries range from Al Alvarez, Johnny Moss and Chris Moneymaker, whilst also providing definitive rulings, reference and poker terminology. So if you need to know your implied pot odds from your prop bets, your check raises from your bad beats, or if you just want to browse through for some interesting trivia tidbits, this is the book for you. It will be selling for £14.99.
Allan was best known for his work in television. A script writer for the 1960’s TV version of Batman, introducing the TV listings page and working on the production of the cult music show ‘Ready Steady Go!’, he was described by The Guardian newspaper as ‘one of the most influential innovators in British media in the 20th century’.
