$1m buy-in event announced for 2012 World Series of Poker

Friday, 3 June 2011

When we heard Erik Seidel had won the World Poker Tour High Roller $100k buy-in event, we assumed it was a joke – of course he couldn’t possibly win ANOTHER huge six-figure entry event. When we heard that Dusk Till Dawn were hosting a 5,000-player Grand Prix IV, we assumed it was a joke – of course they can’t TRIPLE the UK attendance record.

Well, we’ve stopped assuming things are jokes now even when a Super-Duper-Mega-Monkeyballs-High-Roller event (working title) was announced for the 2012 World Series of Poker with a buy-in of a million dollars. Already, fifteen players have confirmed their participation.

Guy LaLiberte and his One Drop foundation, providing drinking water to those in impoverished countries, will receive 11% of the entries of each tournament. Patrik Antonius, Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen, Tony G and Andy Beal are the poker players confirmed for this event with LaLiberte, High Stakes Poker fish Phil Ruffin and Bobby Baldwin also confirming their attendance.

With some obvious soft spots in the field we wouldn’t be surprised to see this event attract several dozen players despite the seven-figure entry fee.
