According to one of the all-time greats of the game, if you don't see a pair in eight hours, it makes you go crazy. This was Brunson's remark as he locked horns with Guy Laliberté in an $800k pot on High Stakes Poker.
Laliberté had proved to be one of the most active players at the table, and in this hand he called a raise to $11,200 from Brunson. The Texan was holding Ad-Td whilst Laliberté had Ah-5h. There were two other players who also called, making a $60k pot before a flop.
The flop came Ac Js 4d, with Brunson's bet of $40,000 being called only by Laliberté. Then the action really began when the 2d came on the turn. Laliberté now had a gutshot straight draw with his top pair, and felt happy enough with that hand to re-raise Brunson's $110,000 bet to $310,000. Doyle had managed to pick up a flush draw though, and was a 3 to 1 favourite to win the pot. The players ran the river twice, and Brunson took both to scoop an $818k pot.
The record was broken whilst Doyle was still counting his cash though, after Sammy Farha and Patrick Antonius managed to get $998k in the middle just moments later.
The Finnish pro moved all in when he flopped top pair on a nine-high board, and Sammy called instantly with his two overcards and flush draw. This time the players agreed to run it four times, and whilst Farha was a 53% favourite, he only managed to pick up one of the four, netting Antonius almost $750,000.
