A bomb blast ripped through a hotel in New South Wales after a device planted in a poker machine room detonated. The explosion at Cessnock’s Wentworth Hotel happened shortly before 1.30am local time, blowing up a machine in the ground floor poker machine room.
Firefighters who attended the scene said that an explosive device was recovered from inside the room. Twelve people who were sleeping upstairs, including the manager, escaped injury, Cessnock fire office Mark Williams said.
Detectives from Sydney were searching the room today, and were joined by a team of bomb specialists to aid them with their investigations.
Mr Williams said that he heard the blast from the local fire station, which is about 300 metres from the hotel. When the fire brigade arrived at the hotel there was a strong smell of gunpowder and a front window had been blown out, littering the roadside with glass.
'Most of the damage is confined to the front room, where the device was found,' Mr Williams said.
There have been suggestions the blast may have targeted a cash machine but this could not be confirmed.
'It's just an unusual incident it's hard to say what the motive was,' Mr Williams said.
