Did anyone hear Roy Brindley on Gabby Logan's show on Radio 5 yesterday? Some interesting stuff. I agree about his poker is a game of skill argument but the examples he chose weren't the greatest.
http://tinyurl.com/bjkt76 It's about 40 minutes in on the iPlayer. I've always found him a bit intense whenever he's been on the telly, even in the commentary box. His autobiography sounds like it could be a decent read though. |

I'm currently reading his book; "Life's a Gamble" and i can't put it down.
He tells of his life and how gambling got a hold of him from an early age (His dad and nan were very keen on the horses and dogs).
This book charts the highs and lows of his gambling obsession; his love of greyhounds - he was a successful dog trainer, to the trials and tributations of his massive wins and losses, 'until he sank even lower, a wanted man living rough on the streets, begging for change, to ultimately turning things around and getting back on his feet.
We've all lost too much money and experienced despair at certain gambling moments in our lives but Roy Brindley's story has a manic rawness to it, showing him to be a talented but troubled soul going hell for leather for the monster win with a conviction that borders on the insane, to acheive the fleeting "Buzz" that only a £50 four horse accumulator "Coming in" can offer and he hasn't even discovered poker yet, i can't wait!

Sounds like it's well worth a look. I heard him talking about when he lived in a kennel while training the dogs. He's also said that playing poker was the best thing that ever happened to him as it stopped him leaking all his cash at the dog track.
I'm always amazed at successful poker players who donk away mountains of cash playing roulette and other pure luck casino games. It just seems to go against everything that's supposed to make you a good poker player. |
