Hi Bigmac, Just to say that I was away on holiday for a bit, sorry for the late replies, but I'm back now.
With regards to the 'Durrr Challenge', whatever you feel Tom Dwan's motivations may be, it HAS to be good for poker. These sorts of heads up grudge matches have been around for many years and always created as lot of interest. The internet has changed everything though. You had to be in Vegas years ago to watch the greats do battle, but now all the action comes direct to your laptop. You could possibly datamine all the hands and review them later to see what the best of the best are doing; that alone must be good for the poker community.
Without doubt, the swings in this match could be enormous and into the millions of dollars. Are the players setting themselves up for a fall? There's definitely a lot of pride at stake and Durrr is laying 3/1 which shows a hell of a lot of confidence. No-one really knows what the fall-out will be (at the time of writing this Durrr is on a reported $3M down-swing on FTP), both financially and emotionally for the players. Should be fun to watch though... |

Hi AllyC, Good question. Yes, I have noticed traits between nationalities in the time that I have been playing. For example, the Scandies have definitely built themselves a fearsome reputation on the tables, playing generally very aggressively.
So in general, I do think it is worth paying attention to where people are from when you are playing live or online (but be careful though not to put TOO much emphasis on this information).
The US is a hard one to try and compartmentalise as their player pool is so big. When I play, I do find that the younger Americans are normally quite highly skilled. They have strong communities where the share information and discuss the games in great detail. However, at the WSOP which attracts ALL players, I generally find the standard in the large tournaments quite weak.
