Nowhere near addicted thankfully. Poker has helped a few people escape from mug punting on the horses and dogs. Roy Brindley's book is well worth a look http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lifes-Gamble-Stakes-Poker-Professional/dp/0553819410/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1288197234&sr=1-1
He credits poker for saving him from more serious gambling problems. The beauty of poker is that you can get better through study and hard work. The more work you put in the more you'll gain in the end. (at least that's the theory!) |

This was poorly-disguised spam. I've removed the links but kept the thread up because it could be fun. Let's see how much of a degen I am...
1)Did you ever lose time from work or school due to gambling? My entire A-Levels were spent playing poker in the Sixth Form common room. Most of my degree was spent playing online or in London Poker Meetup games. My work, however, would be nigh impossible if I didn't play poker. 2)Has gambling ever made your home life unhappy? My mum hates it. So yes, I suppose so. 3)Did gambling affect your reputation? Only in a positive way. 4)Have you ever felt remorse after gambling? Only when I lose. 5)Did you ever gamble to get money with which to pay debts or otherwise solve financial difficulties? Yes, of course. I plan to do it again. Seems the most elegant solution. 6)Did gambling cause a decrease in your ambition or efficiency? My ambition to win money is stronger than ever. My efficiency at doing so is debatable. 7)After losing did you feel you must return as soon as possible and win back your losses? Yes. That's pretty natural. 8)After a win did you have a strong urge to return and win more? Yes. That's pretty natural. 9)Did you often gamble until your last dollar was gone? The last dollar in my iPoker or PokerStars account, yes. Touch wood but OnGame is still unbusted. 10)Did you ever borrow to finance your gambling? It's called a stake. 11)Have you ever sold anything to finance gambling? Besides my soul? 12)Were you reluctant to use "gambling money" fo normal expenditures? No, money is money. If I don't gamble with it I'm going to spend it. 13)Did gambling make you careless of the welfare of yourself or your family? No more so than usual. 14)Did you ever gamble longer than you had planned? For sure. Everyone on this forum knows the "alright, I'll sit out next big blind. OK, just one more orbit. OK, ten more minutes..." feeling. 15)Have you ever gambled to escape worry or trouble? No, that's what alcohol and psychadelic drugs are for. Perhaps I should take a different quiz? 16)Have you ever committed, or considered committing, an illegal act to finance gambling? No but I held a gun overnight for a friend and we later took a rug from a big house. I then murdered Fanucci and took over the operations in New York before World War II... wait, no, sorry. That wasn't me, that was Vito Corleone. 17)Did gambling cause you to have difficulty in sleeping? Haha oh my God yes. That tends to happen when your day consists of 12-tabling small stakes online and whoring rakeback until 5am then going to work in a coffee shop and stealing Red Bulls until the cows come home, then perhaps popping into a lecture, going home, sleeping for a few hours and getting on the grind again. 18)Do arguments, disappointments or frustrations create within you an urge to gamble? No, my lack of money and generally superior play creates within me an urge to gamble. 19)Did you ever have an urge to celebrate any good fortune by a few hours of gambling? No, but most of my good fortune comes from running above EV. 20)Have you ever considered self destruction or suicide as a result of your gambling? I punched my desk and threw my chair over when I was two-outered in the PokerStars $20k guaranteed with 3 tables left out of 6,000 players. First was $5k, pot was for the chip lead. That WAS fun! It's worrying that people use it as a GA quiz though. Some of the questions are a bit ridiculous. |

1) Did you ever lose time from work or school due to gambling? No but I would have liked to my stupid “work ethic” instilled whilst I was you almost makes it impossible really. Sometimes I will take a day off and Iron whilst playing poker. No such problems for my brother or many other people I guess they just do what they want without the moral controls I am under. 2) Has gambling ever made your home life unhappy? Yes no one seems to understand the level of concentration that is required to win one of these events. I see pkr as very similar to my chess obsession. 3) Did gambling affect your reputation? Who cares about rep’s these days nobody anybody life is for living not worrying? 4) Have you ever felt remorse after gambling? Every time I feel remorse it is a very hard sport to do well in 5) Did you ever gamble to get money with which to pay debts or otherwise solve financial difficulties? 6) Did gambling cause a decrease in your ambition or efficiency? 7) After losing did you feel you must return as soon as possible and win back your losses? 8) After a win did you have a strong urge to return and win more? 9) Did you often gamble until your last dollar was gone? 10) Did you ever borrow to finance your gambling? 11) Have you ever sold anything to finance gambling? 12) Were you reluctant to use "gambling money" for normal expenditures? Money management is important but should be completely separate, ring fenced and spent when your ahead 13) Did gambling make you careless of the welfare of yourself or your family? 14) Did you ever gamble longer than you had planned? 15) Have you ever gambled to escape worry or trouble? 16) Have you ever committed, or considered committing, an illegal act to finance gambling? 17) Did gambling cause you to have difficulty in sleeping? 18) Do arguments, disappointments or frustrations create within you an urge to gamble? 19) Did you ever have an urge to celebrate any good fortune by a few hours of gambling? Playing poker in tournaments is not quite as bad as gambling I feel and some separation needs to be made. Gambling for it’s own sake is serious but working towards improvement within a tight budget is not quite as bad, I feel.
This is a crazy question for me when the next game can be just a click away – can you play when you’re dead perhaps it is that serious for some and I agree they may need help. I have tried not to be flippant with my answers but feel some of the questions are a little poor. Nobody at techno-junkies with OCD logging off |
